Strive for Five: Day 2

The second day of the Championships got off to a very early start, much too early. We headed to the field at eight in the morning to remove the field tarp that we hauled on the night before, but it was still raining. After waiting and waiting for an hour and a bit, we ripped the tarp off and did some work to dry up the playing surface to make it playable for the day of games.

As we all headed home for naps before our big game that night, two games were played with some good weather thankfully. Before the next scheduled game that streak stopped. The hail and sleet started and thankfully the Vancouver Island team helped out to cover the field all up. After a two hour rain delay, we all yanked the tarp off and started to dry up the field once again.

The result was no Homerun Derby. Instead, the game between VIBI and TRU was pushed back and our game scheduled for eight was still on time. After TRU dropped their third straight game of the tournament, removing them from any Championship possibilities, we took to the field to play our game against the Okanagan College Coyotes.

The start went to Clark Grisbrook, who picked up where he left off during the season with another incredible effort in the game. He put up four straight zeros, before the Coyotes finally squeaked one across off of an error with two outs.

Our offense got the bats going early once again, scoring one run in the first. Tyson Zarowny led the inning off with a single and then Tanner Banks moved him to third on a double, before Tyson scored off a fielder’s choice by Corey Scammell.

In the fifth, Banks was involved again as he brought a run across off a fielder’s choice before Chance Wheatley scored on a wild pitch. The two runs in the fifth brought the score to 3-1, enough to crumble the Coyotes for our third straight win of the tournament. The win also punched our ticket to the final game on Sunday morning, as we clinched first place in the round robin.

Today, we face off against the TRU Wolfpack. Their three-loss record means they will not play tomorrow. As for us, regardless of tonight’s outcome, we will be playing in the finals tomorrow afternoon at one pm. The chance for the Dawgs to repeat as five-time champions is approaching quickly, as it will all come down to tomorrow afternoon’s game.

Thanks for getting updated on our second day,

Jesse McGowan
